New Jersey Devils Jersey History

New Jersey Devils Team History

The Devils franchise began as Kansas City Scouts. The name and logo are from the Kansas City Scout statue. The statue is a representation of a Native American returning on horse back from a hunting trip. The main colour would be blue with red and yellow trim.

Due to poor performance and economic problems the team only lasted in Kansas City for 2 years and was relocated to Denver. The Scouts were one of the first teams to be relocated in almost 30 years.

Renamed the “Colorado Rockies” the team played in Denver from 1976-82. The Rockies jersey is a depiction of a mountain with a crested letter C in the middle of the patch as well as on the shoulders. The jersey remained very similar to the former Scouts, keeping the same colours and changing only the striping pattern

The team’s stay in Denver would be short lived, despite decent attendance. Ownership issues would cause the team to move to New Jersey in 1982, where the team became the Devils as voted by the fans.

The name comes from a legendary creature which is said to reside in southern New Jersey and is believed to be the child of Satan.

With a new name also came a new logo, jersey, and team colours. Red would become the new primary colour, with green becoming the new secondary colour. The new logo would be a red melding of the New Jersey (N.J.) initials with identifiable images of a devil (pointed tail and horns), set inside a green circle.

In 1992, the team would update the jersey slightly by updating there yoke and some of the striping. Most importantly, the team changes the secondary colour from green to black.

From 2008 on and with Reebok’s introduction of the new Edge uniform, the team announced it would make no changes to its appearance.

The team has never had an alternate jersey and team general manager Lou Lamoriello has stated that he never plans to develop one.
