The Minnesota Wild dug deep to find Khudobin and discovered him protecting the net for a lower-level junior club in Magnitogorsk, Russia. A seventh round pick (206th overall) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, he eventually came to North America in 2005-06 to play for the WHL’s Saskatoon Blades. He went back to Magnitogorsk the next year, but the allure of one day playing in the NHL was strong and he took the hard road by toiling in the ECHL and AHL before finally making his debut with the Wild in 2009-10. Retaining the number 35 after being traded to the Boston Bruins, he only appeared in 14 games with that club over two campaigns. On July 5, 2013, he signed on with the Carolina Hurricanes and settled into a tandem with Cam Ward where he wore the number 31. He spent 2015-16 with the Anaheim Ducks after coming over in a trade, but the free agent market and Boston came looking for him and he signed on to be a backup for starter Tuukka Rask for two years. His reputation as a solid backup was appealing to the Dallas Stars when he became a free agent once again and he was inked on July 1, 2018. Back wearing the number 35, he faced some tough nights with his new team but recorded a pair of shutouts along the way.
