Goodrow was on the edge of turning pro as the end of the 2013-14 season approached and the former captain of the OHL’s North Bay Battalion signed with the San Jose Sharks as a free agent. The deal spurred him to lead the league in goals during the playoffs and he earned a spot on the NHL club’s roster in 2014-15 and wore the number 89 as a rookie. In the two seasons that followed, Goodrow shuffled between the AHL and NHL and only saw limited action with the parent club. He switched to the number 23 in 2016-17 and clawed his way back into a full-time NHL spot. He battled injuries in 2017-18, but then bounced back nicely. The 2019-20 season saw him hitting career highs, but as the Sharks languished near the bottom of the standings, he was shipped off to Tampa Bay on February 24, 2020. At the time, he ranked among the league leaders in penalty minutes and wore the numbers 23 and 19 over his first eight outings with the Lightning.
