Coleman was the USHL’s Player of the Year in 2010-11 and racked up several honours during a remarkable season a captain of the Indiana Ice. The New Jersey Devils listened to the advice of their scouting staff and took a chance on him with the 75th overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, but it would be a few years before he was ready for pro action as he headed to Miami University (Ohio). Capping off his collegiate career with a championship, he advanced to the AHL’s Albany Devils in 2015-16. He spent part of the next year in the minors as well and was able to make a mid-season debut with New Jersey wearing the number 40. Cracking the roster to start 2017-18, he chopped his digits by half and donned the number 20 instead. A budding penalty killer, he gave a solid 25-point as a freshman and blossomed into a solid sniper in 2018-19 thanks to a 22-goal effort. As the Devils struggled throughout 2019-20, Coleman managed to emerge as one of the team’s top offensive talents and was on pace to post a career high in both goals and assists before being traded away to the Tampa Bay Lightning on February 16, 2020 for Nolan Foote and a future first round pick.
