One of three brothers to make it to the pro level, McGinn was a promising young talent with budding leadership skills when picked 47th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2012. At the time, he was an assistant captain with the OHL’s Guelph Storm and was part of their roster when they went to a league title in 2013-14. The AHL’s Charlotte Checkers welcomed him with open arms the next year and thanks to a strong offensive outburst in 2015-16, he earned a long look from the Hurricanes and began wearing the number 23. By the end of the 2017-18 season, McGinn was starting to put up double digits in goals and hit the 30-point mark for the first time in his career. While he did not match or surpass that mark for points in 2018-19, he did manage to have a positive plus-minus rating for the first time. He scored one of the biggest goals in Hurricanes history on April 24, 2019 by beating Washington’s Braden Holtby in overtime to eliminate the defending Stanley Cup champ in a seven-game thriller.
