Part of the prestigious United States National Team Development Program, Carrick made enough of an impression with the Washington Capitals scouting team to be selected in the fifth round of the 2012 NHL Draft. Switching to the OHL’s Plymouth Whalers for 2012-13, he was NHL ready the next year. Splitting 2013-14 between the Capitals and the AHL’s Hershey Bears, he wore the number 58 at the beginning of his career. The next two campaigns saw him primarily stuck in the minors, but he appeared in two straight AHL All-Star Games and was traded off to the Toronto Maple Leafs. In his new surroundings, he switched to the number 8 and remained on their roster until the end of 2017-18 – a year where he put up a career-high 12 points. On October 1, 2018, he was traded to Dallas for a future seventh round draft pick. His time with the Stars was brief, but he did get different digits and began wearing the number 5 before being moved once again to the New Jersey Devils with a third rounder for Ben Lovejoy on February 23, 2019.
