Showing a great deal of promise while skating in the HC Kosice system, Cernak was initially drafted 43rd overall by the Los Angeles Kings in 2015. Heading over to North America soon after, he joined the OHL’s Erie Otters and still saw international action with Slovakia. Before he won a league championship in 2017, the Kings traded him to the Tampa Bay Lightning as part of a deal that also involved goaltender Peter Budaj. Cernak only needed one full season in the AHL before he got an extended shot with the Lightning in 2018-19. Wearing the number 81, he put a respectable 18 points as a rookie and chipped in three assists during playoff action. As a sophomore, he matched the previous season’s output of five goals before play was suspended.
