With the second overall pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, the Flyers selected van Riemsdyk out of the University of New Hampshire. He finally made his debut with Philadelphia to start the 2009-10 season and enjoyed a successful rookie campaign as the team rolled to an appearance in the Stanley Cup Final. In subsequent seasons, his offensive totals rose slightly on a per-game basis with each passing year and he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Luke Schenn on June 23, 2012. In Toronto, van Riemsdyk was an important part of the team's offense and hit the 30-goal mark for the first time in 2013-14 and posted a career-best 62 points in 2016-17. While he had worn the number 21 for the majority of his playing days, he switched to 25 when the Maple Leafs retired the digits that had been worn by Hall of Famer Borje Salming. On July 1, 2018, he made the decision to sign with the Flyers once again as a free agent and delivered 27 goals during his first season back in the City of Brotherly Love.
