Polak was a low-risk late-round pick (180th overall) for the St. Louis Blues in 2004 and he left his home country of the Czech Republic soon after to spend a year with the WHL’s Kootenay Ice. Returning home to spend a year with HC Vitkovice, he made a second straight appearance at the World Junior Championship and was not able to repeat as a bronze medallist. Over his first two seasons in North America, Polak donned the number 46 and split his time between St. Louis and their AHL affiliate, the Peoria Rivermen. In 2009-10, he gave a career-best offensive performance with 21 points and remained with the team until being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs on June 28, 2014. While he missed a little bit of action in 2014-15, he was on pace for a big season the next year before being traded to the San Jose Sharks. Not wanting to leave Toronto, he re-signed with the club as a free agent on July 2, 2016. He was part of two teams that were able to make the postseason, but once that contract expired, he was on the move again to the Dallas Stars. With his new club, the hard hitting defender had to change to the number 45 and earned his fair share of aches and pains by blocking 152 shots – the highest total of his career.
