The son of a German hockey legend, Kuhnhackl starred in his hometown of Landshut and caught the eyes of Pittsburgh’s scouts heading into the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Selected in the fourth round (110th overall), he made the decision to join the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires for 2010-11 and eventually worked his way up to the AHL with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins two years later. Splitting the 2015-16 campaign between the minors and the parent club, he was able to win a Stanley Cup championship as a rookie. He followed it up with another title in 2016-17, but his offensive output dropped dramatically the next year. On July 2, 2018, he became a member of the New York Islanders thanks to free agency and spent a lot of time on the shelf due to injury. Changing numbers from 34 to 14 due to the move, he was back in the lineup in time for playoff action and he contributed three assists over an eight-game span.
